Accelerated Readers
Dear Students and Parents,
So that everyone can take full advantage of our school's resources, I
would like to review the process for using the Accelerated Reader
Program. This might also be especially helpful to our new students.
For background, the Accelerated Reader Program is
intended to increase a student's interest in reading, along with their
vocabulary, and their comprehension. We have tried to encompass in our
selections, both books that are considered to be classics and books
that provide for a wide range of current interests. Once the student
had read the book, a quiz is taken that asks ten questions pertaining
to the book. The student receives points for each book depending on the
percentage of questions answered correctly.
High school students should give particular
consideration to participating in the program. A strong background in
the classics will be a helpful step toward success in college
literature classes and will also help increases vocabulary scores on
scholastic achievement test.
The Process is a follows:
- Choose a book to read from the list of quizzes available. The list can be found in the library and on our school website: acreader.htm.
The books are divided into two categories by approximate reading
levels. These categories are middle grades and upper grades. There are
many books in the middle grades category for the younger students in
our school.
- Many of the
books have been donated by the Parent's Auxiliary or other students
after they have finished reading them. Each book has a cared on the
inside cover that indicates the reading level and points that are
possible to achieve. Write your name and the date on the card, and give
the card to Mrs. Wood in the office of the elementary building.
- After reading the book return it to Mrs. Wood
- Ask
Mrs. Wood to help you take the computerized quiz that pertains to that
book. The quizzes have been loaded into the computer in the library in
the elementary building. You will need the password you have been
assigned. At the end of the test, the correct score and points earned
will be shown and will also print out in the office. A copy will be
given to your reading teacher and another copy will be mailed to your
home.
Remember, participation in the Accelerated Reader Program
is not required.
However, it is strongly recommended as studies have shown that readers
consistently score higher on testing. The following are the recommended
goals as determined by Mrs. Morrell.
